Heavy Inflows into Nagarjunasagar Blamed for Sunkishala Project Tunnel Collapse
Hyderabad: The HMWS&SB has blamed huge inflows of 3.5 lakh cusecs into the Nagarjunasagar for the destruction of the tunnel gate and side wall collapse at the Rs 2,215-crore Sunkishala intake well project.
The board in press release said there was a sudden wave action at Nagarjunasagar reservoir and water entered the Sunkishala tunnel. To set up a gate on the tunnel towards the sump, the soil on the side of the reservoir had been removed, it said.
The length of the side wall was 270 metres and the total length of the walls built inside the well was around 1,020 meters. Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) won the tender for this project, contracted on June 11, 2021, the board said.
It said that MEIL was expecting a flood and increase in water level by the end of August. As on date, 60 per cent of the intake well works of Sunkishala, 70 per cent of pumping main works and 40 per cent of electro-mechanical works have been completed.
