Heavy Rains Lash Hyderabad, Inundate Roads

Hyderabad:After a week of scorching temperatures, Hyderabad witnessed heavy rainfall on Friday, accompanied by thunder and lightning, from around 9.15 pm. The sudden downpour inundated several parts of the city, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

According to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the highest recorded rainfall in GHMC limits was 36.8 mm at Chilkanagar in Uppal, followed by 21.8 mm at Nacharam and 20 mm at Bandlaguda. Other notable locations include Habsiguda (18.8 mm), Osmania University (17.0 mm), and Nagole (17.0 mm).

Overall, 20 locations within the GHMC boundaries reported rainfall ranging from 10 mm to 36.8 mm, with all regions recording light to moderate showers.

Heavy rainfall, especially in areas like Ramantapur, Uppal, Nagole, Vanasthalipuram, LB Nagar, and several others, led to waterlogging on roads. Commuters faced difficulties navigating through water-filled streets, and the sudden showers caused power outages in multiple localities.

The GHMC authorities were on high alert, urging residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary due to the possibility of further rain and lightning strikes.

Significant rainfall was reported across the state. Nalgonda district saw the highest rainfall, with Chandampet recording 85.3 mm. Velanda in Nagarkurnool followed with 77.5 mm, and Mamidala in Thipparthi mandal received 74.5 mm.

Other districts such as Sangareddy, Jangaon, and Suryapet recorded substantial rainfall, ranging between 71.8 mm and 63.5 mm. Overall, 20 locations reported rainfall above 49.8 mm, indicating widespread heavy showers across the state.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad has issued a rain alert for the next three days, predicting light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in several districts, including Adilabad, Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, and others. A yellow alert has been issued, urging residents to take precautions.

The weather department highlighted a cyclonic circulation over the central Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a low-pressure system by September 23, likely affecting the weather patterns over Telangana and adjoining regions. This system is expected to bring more rainfall, especially over northern Telangana and coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.
