Hyderabad: The historic well near the Telangana Legislative Council building, next to Jubilee Hall in the Public Garden, Nampally, has fallen into neglect. It is now contaminated with drainage water and foul smell, worrying morning walkers and local environmentalists.
The well, which provided clean water during the Nizam era and helped keep the area around Jubilee Hall and the legislative building, has become infected due to drainage water. The contamination has killed at least 12 tortoises and 34 fish on November 20.
Social activist Mohammed Abid Ali, told Deccan Chronicle, "The well is not only a part of our heritage but an essential component of the garden's ecosystem. Ignoring this problem puts the buildings at risk and harms the health of both the legislative members and the people who visit the garden every day.”
“Drainage water has been seeping into the well for the past seven days," said a security guard near the Legislative Council building. "Despite complaints made to multiple departments, no action has been taken and the issue remains unresolved.”
One of the maintenance staff in the Public Garden said, “Yes, the well became polluted due to debris and a drainage leak from a nearby concrete building. The leaked water has caused contamination in the area. We have already filed a complaint with the water board, but no action has been taken yet. This issue has been there for several days, and it’s frustrating because it’s not getting resolved.”
