Hyderabad: 12 City Lakes Set for Rejuvenation

Rs 100 crore SDRF allocation awaited from Centre

Hyderabad: Twelve lakes in the city have been shortlisted for a facelift jointly by the HMDA and the GHMC. While the former has proposed to restore 12 lakes with its own funds, the GHMC is selecting the lakes. Incidentally, some of the shortlisted lakes don't even have a drop of water.

The Bathukammakunta in Amberpet and Mundikunta near Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) fall in this category. Presently bushes are being removed at Bathukammakunta and works are yet to commence at Mundikunta.

Those set for rejuvenation by HMDA include Safilguda lake, Kapra lake, Nallacheruvu and Kamunicheruvu.

“Though we are executing works, we are awaiting Rs 100 crore State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) allocation from the union government. This will cover costs incurred on diverting sewage to ensure that the lakes are not polluted,” said a GHMC official.

Project rejuvenation will include fencing of lakes, building walking tracks, gazebos, open gyms, children play areas and benches. These works will be in addition to illumination and developing greenery. Strengthening of sluice gates, bunds and desilting will also be taken up as part of the exercise.

“We will take up cost-effective works like plantation on either side of nalas where sewage water flows so that the water is less polluted when it drains into the lakes,” said a GHMC official.

Fresh life

Among the 12 lakes that will be restored are: Bathukammakunta in Amberpet, Mundikunta near HICC, Safilguda, Kapra, Kukatpally, Errakunta, Nallacheruvu, Kamunicheruvu, Appacheruvu and Sunnamcheruvu.
