44 Transpeople Picked to Assist Traffic Cops in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: In a first, probably in the world, 44 transgender persons have been selected as Hyderabad city traffic police assistants.

They were selected from among 58 contenders in the qualifiers that included a 800 metres running race, high jump and long jump competitions, which were held at Goshamahal police stadium here on Wednesday.

The recruitment is a part of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s initiative to give recognition to the transgender community in the society. Orders of their appointment as traffic assistants have been issued, said Hyderabad police commissioner C.V. Anand.

The list of candidates was given by the social welfare department. Only those in the 18-40 years age-group and having passed at least SSC are eligible, Anand said.

He held key meetings with transgenders regarding their recruitment and issued orders after the physical endurance tests.

Addressing the successful transgenders, he said “each of you should be a role model for your community and bring a good name to the state police department.”

The test was organised by a recruitment committee formed by DCP south west, home guard commandant, and additional DCP CAR, in the presence of officials of the welfare department.

Bureaucrats Anitha Ramachandran and Ravi Gupta, along with P. Vishwaprasad, additional CP (traffic) and other senior police officers participated in the programme.
