Hyderabad Cybercrime cops help credit card fraud victim recover Rs 1.18 lakh
Hyderabad: The city cyber crime unit (CCU) cops helped a cyberfraud victim get back `1.18 lakh which he had lost to a scamster. According to the CCU police, the victim was responding to a call from the fraudster who offered to increase the credit card limit and collected his details.
The fraudster instructed the victim to install an APK file sent via WhatsApp. When the victim did so, an amount of `1,18,196 was debited from his credit card. The victim approached the police station on Wednesday following which the NCRP team of the CCU removed the malware from the victim’s device, cybercrime DCP Dara Kavitha said.
The investigation revealed that the debited amount was used for purchases on an ecommerce website. "Notices were sent to the authorities to block the funds. The merchant refunded the total amount to the victim’s credit card without a court order, the DCP said.
The DCP has asked the people not to install any APK files forwarded or sent through WhatsApp as the fraudsters use it to steal data. “Never respond to emails and embedded APK file links in messages and calls asking you to update or verify KYC documents pending. Never share your data over the phone or directly with strangers. Victims of such cyber frauds can report immediately at 1930 or http://cybercrime.gov.in,” Kavitha added.
