Hyderabad: GHMC Plans Stray Dog Rehabilitation Centres on City Outskirts

HYDERABAD: GHMC officials stated on Friday that the corporation would construct rehabilitation centres for strays, similar to dog pounds, on the city outskirts. These centres would be used to house aggressive strays, sources told Deccan Chronicle.

The GHMC was responding to a directive from the Telangana High Court earlier in the day to examine the feasibility of establishing rehabilitation centres for stray dogs.

“Arrangements related to food, water and medicines will be in place at these rehabilitation centres, and aggressive strays will be kept there. They will be monitored by veterinary doctors,” a GHMC official said.

He said that the GHMC was preparing its reply to the court with regard to the rehabilitation centres.

The court also suggested that the corporation publicise the task of setting up rehabilitation centers, citing that those who were seeking such facilities could also fund it or provide food for the strays.

In addition to this, the GHMC has decided to conduct a survey of strays along with animal welfare organisations registered with Animal Welfare Board of India this month.

“We have already written a requisition letter to Blue Cross of Hyderabad for the survey. Once the survey is completed, the impact of sterilisation will be revealed when we compare it to previous year data,” said another senior GHMC official.

The court has also ordered the GHMC to set up more animal birth control centres and the corporation officials said that the construction of three shelters was underway at Kattedan, Rajendranagar and Nallagandla.

Speaking about the grievance redressal, the corporation said that complaints can be reported to its helpline: 040- 21111111, or 040-23225397.

The GHMC also issued instructions to the entomology staff, tax inspectors and bill vollectors to ensure that all the owners of the pet dogs are registered with the corporation and in order to remind them the due date of anti-rabies vaccinations.
