Hyderabad: The decks have been cleared for electricity bill payments through UPI apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Amazon Pay, and Paytm. Consumers can now make payments through these apps.
It may be recalled that the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana had earlier stopped accepting online payments through service providers like PhonePe, Google Pay, and banks, citing an RBI directive. However, both North and South Discoms have now joined the Bharat Bill Payment Services, allowing consumers to use these apps again.
As a result of this move, the Discoms will have to pay an additional Rs 2 plus GST per transaction, leading to an estimated additional burden of Rs 1.5 crore per month for the two Discoms.
Officials have advised that using Discom-owned apps for payments might be safer, as consumers can directly contact Discom officials if they encounter any issues while making payments. There were no charges for bill payments through apps before the RBI directive was enforced.
