Hyderabad Hosts International Kite Festival for Sankranti

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is buzzing with the Sankranti celebrations, as people started flying kites and lining up entertainment and cultural activities to preserve and promote the tradition.

The International Kite Festival at Parade Ground organised by the tourism department, starting Monday, is expected to draw over 15 lakh visitors by the time it ends on January 15. The three-day event will host kite-flyers from over 20 countries, including Thailand, China, Singapore, Korea, Australia, and Sri Lanka. Two dedicated kite zones have been arranged — one for international and national participants while the other for families.

“This festival reminds us to spend time together with family. We’re excited to attend the event,” said Raju, a regular attendee. Shiksha, another regular attendee, said, “The kite festival is a lot of fun. I’ve been attending it for six years now.”

Malls across the city are decked out in detailed Sankranti-themed decorations featuring traditional props like cows, rangoli, pongal pots, and huts. Many people were seen clicking pictures at these settings. MGBS Metro station has also been decked up with one such theme resembling a traditional village scene.

At DSL Virtue Mall, Uppal, a kite festival on Sunday saw enthusiastic participation. “Today’s generation shows little interest in kite flying, but such events allow all age groups to explore this culture,” said Teja Reddy, the event organiser.

“I started flying kites at 15 and now teach my kids. My son is learning to fly kites at nine.” Ravi, another participant, reflected, “This festival reminds me of my childhood when we took pride in cutting others’ manjas,” said Anuradha, one of the attendees.

Furthermore, a similar kite festival was organised at AMR planet mall, ECIL.

At Shilparamam, the culture of Sankranti is on full display with traditional rituals like Gangireddulu (ceremonial processions featuring cows), the age-old Haridasu traditions, and many other activities which offer a glimpse into the rich heritage of the festival. These events are attracting both locals and tourists.

Markets across Hyderabad, including the Mahankali Temple area in Secunderabad, have transformed into bustling streets. Vendors reported brisk sales of kites, manjas, rangoli powders, and sweets. “The business is good. Many children are excited to buy kites during this season,” said a vendor.

Further enhancing the festive spirit, Vaishnava temples are preparing for the grand Goda Devi Kalyanam on January 12, the celestial wedding of Goddess Andal (Goda Devi) and Lord Ranganatha.
