Hyderabad: Jumbos Feast at Zoo Park on World Elephant Day

Hyderabad: The four elephants at the Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) here enjoyed a special ‘jumbo feast’ on Monday to celebrate World Elephant Day. The zoo has four Asiatic elephants: Vanaja, Asha, Sita, and Vijay.

The special meal consisting of green salad, jaggery, mixed fruits, sugarcane, and coconuts, which was served to the elephants in their enclosures. The event aimed to raise awareness about elephant conservation and protection.

Dr Sunil S. Hiremath, director and curator of the zoo, highlighted the lush 10-acre enclosure housing the elephants, complete with a swimming pool, mud bath, and shower facilities. He said that the elephants appeared to enjoy the feast, finishing it within minutes.

"To promote awareness among citizens about wildlife conservation, we celebrate various eco-days at Nehru Zoological Park," Dr Hiremath said. The event was attended by key zoo officials, including A. Nagamani, deputy curator; Dr M.A. Hakeem, director of veterinary services; and several assistant curators and animal keepers.
