Hyderabad man's daring escape from Cambodia scammers lands him safely in country

Hyderabad: A Hyderabad man returned home after a movie-like escape from a Chinese call centre racket operating in Cambodia.

Gulam Moinuddin, a resident of Kurmaguda, Madannapet in Hyderabad in his attempt to secure a high-paying job abroad had fallen prey to scammers. He had earlier worked as a waiter at an established hotel in Habsiguda. To help his family's debt conditions he decided to move abroad for better opportunities.
Moinuddin sought help from his friend, who has already settled in Malaysia. He advised him to switch his plan from moving to Europe to Cambodia and also connected him to an agent.
The victim had paid Rs 1,15,000 to two agents for securing a job in a call centre, finally he landed in Cambodia on January 20, 2024.
After landing in the foreign country he was received by a man called Salem, who took his passport and took him to PoiPet City near the border of Thailand.
Thereafter, he was taken to a guest house and later to company for an interview. "The company after the interview said my salary would be $ 800. But I soon realised it was involved in scamming Indians," Moinuddin said.
He later described how he was tortured and blackmailed for refusing to work, he was denied food and was only paid $400. The Chinese cyber criminals even demanded a heafy price of $6000 for his release. Even after paying it he was not allowed to leave the country.
The Indian, who graduated from Kakatiya University had then devised a clever plan and took permission from his Chinese employer for shopping groceries. He then took a cab and reached the Indian Embassy leaving behind all his luggage including his passport and visa.
The officers at the Embassy had arranged for a new passport and helped him reach India. Upon his arrival the Telangana Police and the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau had registered various cases under relevant sections.
