2-hr Hyderabad Metro snag hits travellers

Hyderabad: Thousands of people travelling on the Hyderabad Metro Rail’s Blue Line (Nagole to Raidurg, and back) were thrown into chaos and suffering, with the network breaking down for two hours due to a glitch in the signalling system on Wednesday morning.

The chaos on the Raidurg-Nagole line had a ripple effect on other two lines connecting JBS and Imlibun, and LB Nagar and Miyapur. It delayed people from reaching their schools, colleges or offices.

The glitch started at around 7.10 am and was resolved around 9.15 am. But the stations failed to inform the passengers, who were buying tickets, about the issue, leading to crowding at the stations.

After the issue was resolved, Hyderabad Metro Rail authorities went on social media platform X at 9.17 am to say, “Earlier today, Hyderabad Metro rail services encountered a technical glitch in the signaling system. We worked promptly to resolve the issue, and normal services have been restored. We regret any inconvenience caused to our passengers.”

After the news about the glitch spread, the stations witnessed a sudden dip in footfall. On a normal day, Metro Rail ferries close to five lakh passengers.

Ramya Chennoju, a corporate employee from Bhongir, who takes a Metro Rail from Uppal to Raidurg, said: “I am late to my office by half an hour because of the delay. Train slowed down at Madhapur. It stopped at Durgam Cheruvu, with doors staying ajar. The announcement stated the trip was delayed. As I was getting late, I got down and reached my office at Raheja Mindspace.”

Another passenger Daram Praveen Kumar said the train stopped at the Raidurg but the doors were not opening. This went on for around six minutes, setting off panic among passengers.

Social media was flooded with posts, pointing to the poor maintenance of Metro Rail.

Responding to the HMRL’s post, one of the commuters said: “You are responding now after passengers have been standing for more than two hours. At least you could have responded earlier.”

The breakdown happened “because of your poor maintenance. We need to go to the exit for the undesired platform and still we end up paying you the fare,” another passenger said.
