Hyderabad: Scammers Spoof Calls to Dupe People

Hyderabad: Scammers are increasingly using call spoofing techniques to fraud people by either impersonating police officials or postal staff.

In an attempt to avoid getting their calls traced, fraudsters are using technology to change their caller ID,and make it appear as a call originating in Pakistan.

A woman from Karimnagar received calls from a mobile number with +92 country code on WhatsApp. The caller had a police official’s profile picture, and “CBI officer” as his title. He gave the woman the details of her family members, and said her son was arrested by the police and she has to send money immediately.

Call spoofing is a method where the scammers change the caller ID to make it look like the call has originated somewhere else.

In another case, a person received a text message from a mobile number having +92 country code. The message purportedly from IndiaPost said that a shipment could not be delivered due to an incomplete address and asked the receiver of the message to click on a link to update the address for delivering the shipment within 24 hours.

Many people on social media platform X also indicated that they received calls from Pakistan numbers with profile pictures of former CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. An X user wrote: “I got two calls from Pakistan numbers stating that they are ACP from Hyderabad. Beware of these calls.”

Authorities are warning people to be careful. They said that real police will not ask for money over the phone, and urged people to hang up and not give any personal information or money.
