Hyderabad: Step wells restoration at Ilamma varsity to begin
Hyderabad: The restoration work on step wells on the campus of Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University (VCIWU, formerly University College for Women), Koti, will commence soon. The state tourism department has signed an agreement with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to restore ancient stepwells in the city.
Located behind the former British Residency, the two step wells hold historical and architectural value. In 2020, the university undertook the preliminary restoration, cleared vegetation around the step wells and secured them with fencing. The upcoming project aims for a comprehensive restoration that will restore he step wells to their former glory.
The British Residency building was recently restored and has since become a prominent heritage attraction. With the step wells’ restoration set to begin, this effort is expected to enhance the attraction of the site further.
University Vice Chancellor Prof. Surya Dhananjay thanked the government for prioritising the restoration of the heritage structures. “Restoring these historic stepwells will not only add to the beauty of our campus but also attract more visitors, increasing awareness of our cultural legacy. It is our responsibility to protect and preserve these significant sites,” she said.
The restoration project will be undertaken by the Deccan Heritage Foundation and Society for Advancement of Human Endeavor (SAHE), with funding from CII. A letter of interest has already been signed to take the project forward.
