Hyderabad: TEC Seminar on UGC Regulations on State Varsities
The process for appointing vice-chancellors and the entry-level recruitment and eligibility criteria for assistant professors are among the most contentious issues.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Education Commission (TEC) will host a seminar on February 6 titled ‘UGC Regulations—Interference in State Universities’. The seminar comes amid national debates over the recently made public University Grants Commission’s (UGC) draft regulations for 2025. The main concerns revolve around university autonomy, the role of state governments in higher education, and the constitutional framework governing education policy. States like Tamil Nadu and Kerala have already objected to the proposed guidelines.
The process for appointing vice-chancellors and the entry-level recruitment and eligibility criteria for assistant professors are among the most contentious issues. TEC will assess the broader implications of these regulations for state-run universities.
“State universities are losing their autonomy, and that is unacceptable. We are a federal structure, after all, and states do have certain powers," says P.L. Vishveshwar Rao, a member of TEC.
Speakers at the event include former Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy, retired professors from University of Hyderabad and Osmania University, members of the Legislative Council, and experts from the Telangana State Public Service Commission. TEC chairperson Akunuri Murali, will preside over the session.
The seminar will be held from 2 pm to 5.30 pm at the Godavari Conference Hall, Rajiv Vidya Mission Building, SCERT Campus in Basheerbagh.
