HYDERABAD: In an effort to recharge groundwater, the Water Board has made soak pits mandatory for all households with an area of 300 sq. metres and more. To combat this, the Water Board will also be launching the ‘Soak Pit in Every Home’ initiative on October 2.
Under this programme, all homes— especially those built on plots larger than 300 sq.m. must construct soak pits as part of the rainwater harvesting scheme. Technical assistance from geologists will be provided to ensure the scientific construction of these pits. Homes without soak pits will not be granted new water connections.
The Water Board has already started inspecting properties for compliance, revealing that over 13,000 homes lack soak pits. Starting January 2025, homes without soak pits will face double charges for water tanker bookings.

Additionally, the Board is conducting awareness campaigns with the help of NGOs to educate residents about the importance of soak pits and will issue advisory letters to non-compliant households.
