Iconic Secunderabad Railway Station's Main Building To Be Demolished in Phases

The main building of one of the oldest railway stations, Secunderabad Railway Station, is being demolished as part of a redevelopment project. The workers demolished a 100-metre portion near Alpha Hotel and a parcel office.

The main building will be razed down in phases to avoid inconvenience to passengers, said SCR officials.

Secunderabad Railway Station was built in the 1870s during the Nizam era and it served as the principal terminal of the Nizam’s Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR). NGSR was later merged with Indian Railways in 1952 and the railway station was renovated in 1952.

The Secunderabad Railway Station is being developed at a cost of Rs 700 crore. Around 40 per cent of the redevelopment works have been completed and it is said to be on par with international airports.

The authorities earlier demolished a 100-metre portion near the Ganesh Temple for a multi-level parking complex, which is under construction. Some of the key features include dedicated spaces for cafeterias and retail outlets, underground parking, lifts, a Sky concourse, travelators, and escalators.

Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh said it would be a green energy station with solar panels to harness solar energy and sewerage treatment plants to reduce water pollution, apart from several passenger amenities.
