IIT Hyderabad to Host Spic Macay's 10th International Convention
Hyderabad:Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, and Begum Parween Sultana among other top artistes would perform at the Spic Macay’s 10th Annual International Convention from May 26 to June 1. The event is being hosted by the The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H).
The week-long cultural festival will bring together over 1,500 students and volunteers from across India and the world to experience Indian classical music, dance and art.
The convention will feature interactive sessions led by Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, and Gulzar. “It is an honour to host this cultural revolution,” Prof. BS Murthy, Director of IIT Hyderabad, told reporters on Saturday.
The convention will provide free accommodation and meals to registered school and college students, ensuring accessibility to a life-changing cultural experience. Past conventions have been hosted by prestigious institutions such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and JNU.
The event will include classical music and dance performances, folk art displays, heritage walks, crafts workshops, yoga sessions at 4 am, and screening of meaningful cinema. The aim is to immerse participants in an ashram-like atmosphere, free from the distractions of the modern world, to foster deeper connections with India’s artistic and cultural heritage.
Workshops by master artisans in crafts like Gond tribal painting, Madhubani art, and Majuli masks will allow students to explore India’s traditional art forms. Renowned classical dancers and musicians will also lead intensive training sessions in Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Mohiniyattam, and Hindustani vocal music.
“This convention encapsulates our vision of exposing every child to the inspiration and mysticism embodied in India’s rich heritage. We aim to reach every student by 2030,” said a SPIC MACAY spokesperson. The organisation, which conducts over 5,000 events annually worldwide, is dedicated to enriching education by connecting youth to their roots.
