IMD issues yellow alert for several districts in Telangana

HYDERABAD: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad has issued a yellow alert for several districts, while warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and squalls over the next two days. After experiencing continuous rainfall, the Telugu states had seen a brief pause with dry, sunny, and humid weather. The IMD has indicated that rains are set to return, with moderate showers expected on September 21 and 22.

While Hyderabad is expected to have a cloudy sky until September 20, light rains and possible thunderstorms are likely to continue until Friday.

Meanwhile, the yellow alert extends to Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts.

Residents in these areas have been advised to remain cautious, particularly in light of the likelihood of heavy rains, strong winds and lightning strikes.

While the alert may cause concern, particularly for students and parents, it is unlikely that schools and colleges will be closed. Many educational institutions are already preparing for an extended break of 10 days for Dasara and further disruptions to academic schedules may not be a sound move.

The warnings come as the state has already seen a remarkable 34 per cent increase in rainfall during the ongoing southwest monsoon.

Telangana has experienced a significant rise in rainfall this monsoon season, with an average of 898.1 mm recorded across the state, compared to the usual 668.6 mm, a 34 per cent deviation from the norm. Hyderabad has seen a notable increase, receiving 703.6 mm of rain – 28 per cent above the average of 548.8 mm.
