Implementing ABC rules to curb dog menace: KMC
Karimnagar: Following a petition filed by an animal activist Adulapuram Goutham, the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation told the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) that it was implementing the Animal Birth Control (ABC) rules in compliance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, to address the menace of stray dogs in Karimnagar city on Tuesday.
The petitioner had complained that the animal birth control rules were not being followed by the municipal corporation. The officials concerned appeared before the DLSA and stated that the corporation had established the ABC centre behind the district veterinary office and had been in operation since 2020 under an agency. But, since September 2023, when the agency stopped providing the required facilities for taking care of dogs, the contract was handed over to another agency called Swanthantra, they said.
The corporation was not only following the ABC rules strictly but also taking up deworming, immunisation and sterilisation of stray dogs by hiring dog catchers, it said.
The corporation also sent a letter to the director of the animal husbandry department for deputing a full-time veterinary assistant and a surgeon to take care of dogs post-sterilisation.
The municipal corporation was also taking all necessary steps to curb the dog menace in its jurisdiction in Karimnagar, they informed.
