Industries to Be Classified as per Their Pollution Levels
CPCB has said that industries, which reduce pollution levels, recycle wastewater, and use renewable energy will receive incentives under the new system.

Hyderabad: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has introduced a new classification system for industries based on their pollution levels, including a new blue colour category for essential waste.
The red group will comprise highly polluting industries; orange moderately polluting industries; green less polluting industries, while white includes industries with almost zero pollution.
The board had introduced a pollution index (PI) in 2016 to measure pollution levels scientifically, based on the wastewater and air emissions that industry produce, and how harmful they are.
After reviewing industry practices and taking into account the new cleaner technologies, CPCB has revised its classification system and blue colour category covering essential waste management services, such as sewage treatment plants.
Each colour category is assigned based on scores from water pollutant score (PIW), air pollutant (PIA) and waste pollutant (PIH). The cumulative pollution index is calculated on how the industry scores in each pollutant group on a scale of 100.
If the PI score of an industry is equal to or greater than 80, it is considered a red sector; between 80 and 55 orange; 55 to 25 green category and less than 25 in the white category.
CPCB has said that industries, which reduce pollution levels, recycle wastewater, and use renewable energy will receive incentives under the new system. The goal is to promote sustainable practices while ensuring strict monitoring of polluting industries.
