Injured Kerala Elephant Captured, Sent To Rescue Centre for Treatment

Veterinary doctors cleaned the wound and provided initial treatment at the site after which the injured elephant, once it recovered from the sedation, was nudged onto a large truck by two trained kumki elephants.

Hyderabad: The 35-year-old male wild elephant that was reportedly injured in a confrontation with another male elephant in Thrissur district of Kerala nearly four weeks ago, was captured on Wednesday morning and taken to the Kodanad elephant training centre in Ernakulam district.

Officials had previously spotted the injury, captured the elephant, had the wound treated by wildlife veterinarians, and released it back into the wild. However, with videos and photographs of the injured animal, with the prominent hole on its forehead, making the rounds and a huge public outpouring of support in the state to try and save the life of the elephant, the Kerala forest department on Wednesday morning tranquillised the animal in the Athirapilly forest area where it was moving.

Veterinary doctors cleaned the wound and provided initial treatment at the site after which the injured elephant, once it recovered from the sedation, was nudged onto a large truck by two trained kumki elephants.

Once the injured elephant was secured in the truck, it was taken to the Kodanad elephant centre where it will be provided with better and continuous care. The elephant, according to Kerala forest officials, had become weak following the injury which was also infested with maggots.
