Inspection at Hyderabad’s Taj Mahal Hotel After Customer Finds Rat in Curry

Hyderabad: Live cockroaches in the storeroom, unlabelled food items and broken floors in the coking area were among many food safety violations that were found when food safety inspectors from the GHMC went around the Taj Mahal Hotel at Abids on Tuesday. It all began when a customer filed a complaint against the poorly maintained premises and a social media post alleged that a rat was found in the dal curry that was served to a customer. The hotel manager clarified on Wednesday that it was a worm and not a rat.

The GHMC food safety team noticed many food safety violations, including drains that clogged with food waste and water stagnation in the drains and cleaning area. Some employees were without hair net/caps. However, records of water analysis, employee health records and fostac training of food handlers were available.

A show-cause notice was issued to the hotel management on Wednesday, demanding an explanation. Further action will be taken once a response is received.
