It's Stressful to Work at GGH Komaram Bheem: Nursing Staff

Hyderabad: A representation has been submitted by the nursing officers of Government General Hospital in Komaram Bheem Asifabad, highlighting a series of grave concerns and allegations against the hospital administration. This comes in the wake of the death of Ramadevi K., a newly-appointed nursing officer, of a heart attack, reportedly worsened by the immense stress and unfavourable working conditions at the hospital.

The representation, addressed to the principal of the Government Medical College, outlined the numerous challenges faced by the nursing officers, particularly the 129 newly appointed officers who began their duties in February this year. Since their appointment, these officers have been subjected to what they describe as "torture and stress" due to issues such as 'egoism, negligence, professional disrespect, and misuse of power by senior administrative officials.'

The nursing staff alleged several serious concerns, including threats regarding job regularisation and the issuance of memos when casual leaves or attendance issues are raised. They also accused the administration of disseminating incorrect information regarding government orders related to casual leaves, delaying the salary crediting process, and the unethical deduction of salaries without the appropriate sanction of leaves. Despite these hardships, the staff said that three months' salary remains unpaid, with no communication from the office staff regarding this delay.

The nursing officers had also complained about being forced to undertake documentation work at the medical college under disrespectful conditions. This includes being asked to visit the college repeatedly and being treated with disdain by office superintendents. In particular, they highlighted the incompetence of the office staff in handling crucial documentation such as the Telangana State Government Life Insurance (TSGLI) forms and salary-related documents.

Other complaints detail improper sharing of information regarding casual leaves and salary deductions, lack of security at the workplace, and a shortage of surgical and medical supplies at the hospital, which severely hampers the delivery of healthcare services.

Other allegations directed at the nursing superintendent and head nurse for alleged disrespect and unprofessional behaviour. The former was accused of favouritism in allotting duties and granting casual leaves, reportedly facilitated by the previous principal. The misuse of hospital premises and furniture for personal comfort by storing and locking rooms has also been cited as another issue.

The death of Ramadevi, a differently-abled employee, had sparked additional concerns.

According to the representation, she had been subjected to undue stress due to persistent demands from the administration regarding salary documentation and other issues. Despite her physical limitations, Ramadevi was repeatedly asked to visit the medical college.
