Justice Lakshman Highlights Ease of Evidence Recording Under New Criminal Laws
HYDERABAD: Justice K. Lakshman, judge of the Telangana High Court, said that recording of evidence and serving of summons had become easy through the new criminal laws. “The judicial system can now get evidence of any case easily while sitting at any place,” he said.
Justice Lakshman was speaking at the concluding session of the two-day seminar, ‘New criminal laws’, under the aegis of the Metropolitan Criminal Courts Bar Association (MCCBA) here. The three new criminal laws include Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhitha, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
Telangana High Court judge Justice Laxmi Narayana Alishetty, while emphasising the numerous benefits of the new laws, said: "Judges and advocates earlier had trouble with the old laws as we used to run cases only through public prosecution. Now we can take the help of an advocate to lead the evidence."
Advocate Chandrasekaran from the Chennai High Court spoke about the important amendments in the new laws which allowed video conferencing for trials, admissibility of electronic evidence, stricter punishments and harsher penalties for assault on women and presumptions of guilt in certain cases, among others.
Rajavardhan Reddy, president of MCCBA, said, "We are happy to have hosted the two-day event, which focused on the importance of new criminal laws that are useful for both advocates and the public."
