Justice Ramasubramanian to head NHRC

Hyderabad:Former Supreme Court judge Justice V. Ramasubramanian, who was earlier with the Telangana High Court, has been appointed chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) by President Droupadi Murmu.

The post of NHRC chairperson had been lying vacant since June 1, when Justice (retired) Arun Kumar Mishra demitted office on the completion of his tenure.

Justice Ramasubramanian was born on June 30, 1958. He enrolled as a member of the bar on February 16, 1983, and practiced for about 23 years in the High Court of Madras.

He was appointed as an additional judge of the Madras High Court on July 31, 2006, and as a permanent judge on November 9, 2009. He was transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh with effect from April 27, 2016.

After the state’s bifurcation, he was retained as a judge of the Telangana High Court on January 1, 2019. Later, he was sworn-in as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on June 22, 2019.

In September 2023, he was elevated as judge of the Supreme Court.

Several notable judgments were delivered by him in the Telangana High Court and the Supreme Court.

He issued notable orders on the issue of sports quota reservations in medical seats, gave clarity on the presidential orders of local quota, medical admissions and CS land cases, where the lands were claimed by Nizam family members and other private parties.

As the Supreme Court judge, he was a member of the bench that heard arguments concerning the demonetisation policy.
