Khairatabad Ganesh Committee Divides Amid Accountability Dispute

Khairtabad Ganesh has two committees now

HYDERABAD: The poster release for the Khairatabad Ganesh idol on Friday was not without its behind-the-scenes drama.

One group of committee members demanded that the poster be released in the presence of all committee members, while another group opposed it. As the rift widened, a group of Khairtabad residents announced the formation of a new Ganesh committee.

There are two associations, the old Khairtabad Ganesh Utsav Committee and the new Khairtabad Sri Ganesh Utsav Committee, both of which were present at Fridays’s event.

A source on the condition of anonymity told Deccan Chronicle, “The old committee was formed by the members of a single family and the idol installation and celebrations were done with donations from the people. In all these years, there was no audit or accountability for the usage of donations.”

“In 2019, a group of Khairatabad residents got the details of the old committee by making an RTI application and came to know that the procedure of the committee formation and functioning was not following the regulations. That’s why we formed a new committee and forcing the old committee to hold meetings, have the minutes recorded and a proper audit of the accounts conducted,” the source said.
