Khairatabad: Woman Killed, Grandchild Injured in Lift Mishap

Grandchild injured; residents blame poor lift maintenance

HYDERABAD: A 57‑year‑old woman died and her 15‑month‑old grandson was injured after they fell into a lift shaft from the fifth floor of Bhavana Apartments in Anandnagar Colony, Khairatabad, on Friday evening.

Police said the victim, P. Radha, was holding her grandson Joel Joy when she attempted to open the lift grills without realising the lift was not at the floor. Both fell into the shaft.

Radha, who had recently moved with her daughter’s family from Uppal to Anandnagar, was rushed to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) but was declared dead. Joel was shifted to CARE Hospital, Banjara Hills, where he is undergoing treatment.

According to the police, the lift malfunction was caused by a technical issue. Residents, however, alleged that the problem had persisted for a considerable period despite repeated complaints being lodged with the apartment committee and the lift maintenance agency. They claimed that the maintenance contractor failed to respond promptly to the complaints, allowing the fault to continue unresolved.

Police further added that several residents also expressed dissatisfaction with the apartment committee, accusing it of not taking adequate steps to address the issue despite being informed multiple times. They alleged that repeated requests for repairs and safety checks went unheeded, raising concerns about the upkeep of essential facilities in the building.

Khairatabad police registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The body was sent to Gandhi Hospital mortuary for post‑mortem.
