Khalifa leader Zakariya held at Chennai airport

Zakariya, a Warangal resident, migrated from Pakistan to India 25 years ago. He initially settled in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, for eight years before moving to the Janpeerilu area of Warangal, Telangana. In Warangal, he operated a biryani centre near the Under Bridge area, which has remained closed in recent days

WARANGAL: Wasi Zakariya, the national president of the Khalifa Organisation in India, was arrested at Chennai airport while trying to travel to Pakistan via Sri Lanka for the group’s leadership election.

Zakariya, a Warangal resident, migrated from Pakistan to India 25 years ago. After initially living in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, he later settled in Jaanpeerilu, Warangal. He has two wives, both pregnant, and eight children.

He reportedly converted 10-12 people to the Khalifa and ran multiple businesses, including three to four biryani centres in Warangal and Hanamkonda. Additionally, he owned 16 auto-trolley vehicles used for selling sweets (Kovas) and ice creams across local colonies.

The Khalifa organisation, founded by a Pakistani national who recently passed away, is electing a new president, prompting Zakariya’s travel. Police intercepted him at Chennai Airport, uncovering literature linked to Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, an organisation believed to influence minority groups in India.

Authorities are probing Zakariya’s role, his connections to the Khalifa Organisation, and potential national security threats.
