Kidney racket case probe hits Lanka block

The Saroornagar police cracked the racket with four recipients and four donors in Alakananda Hospital, followed by a series of arrests shedding light on the rampant illegal organ transplantation.

Hyderabad: Investigation in the illegal kidney transplantation racket busted in Saroornagar in January has hit a roadblock as its ringleader Pavan still remains outside Indian borders. Though a team was sent to Andhra Pradesh again for probing into the case, the police are clueless about co-accused and main surgeon Sohib.

The Saroornagar police cracked the racket with four recipients and four donors in Alakananda Hospital, followed by a series of arrests shedding light on the rampant illegal organ transplantation.

A senior official earlier mentioned that neurologists, who will be consulted by the dialysis patients, played a major role in revealing the information about those who were in need of kidney transplantation. However, the police could not identify those who helped in abetting the crime, but arrested the organisers who identified the donors.

According to police, Purna, one of the organisers, would collect blood samples from the donors and recipients. If their blood group and Human Leukocyte Antigen matched, they would strike a deal between the two sides.

Laxman, another organiser, who was taken into custody, revealed more details about the role of Pavan, who is still at large. However, the police remained tight-lipped on this case.

Pavan is in Colombo and lookout notices were served against him. His original base for illegal transplantation was in Sri Lanka, but he eventually changed it to Hyderabad.

A source revealed that a team was sent to Visakhapatnam to contact Pavan’s family.

It may be recalled that one of the main surgeons, Dr P. Rajashekar, who was arrested from Chennai, was released after the High Court granted him bail. Later, five medical assistants, who were arrested, also secured bail.

The police are trying to arrest another main surgeon, Dr Sohib from Kashmir. Dr Guntupally Sumanth, managing director of Alakananda Hospital and DR Siddamshetty Avinash, general surgeon, remained tight-lipped pertaining to the details of Shoib.
