Konda Surekha Joins Zoo Animal Adoption Scheme
Hyderabad: Forests and environment minister Konda Surekha on Tuesday announced that she was adopting some animals at the Kakatiya Zoological Park in Hanamkonda, and called on people to step up to fund animal welfare.
Surekha said she was adopting a nilgai, a sambar deer, a chowsingha (four-horned antelope), and a gaur (Indian Bison) for one year. She handed over to the zoo’s assistant curator Mayuri, a cheque for Rs 2 lakh at the rate of Rs 50,000 per animal for its upkeep for a year of the adoption.
The forests minister said being part of the zoo’s animal adoption scheme was very satisfying and called on people to join in the effort and to help the zoo in its efforts to save wildlife. “People can adopt even a small bird, or a tiger, depending on their ability for three months, six months, or up to a year. The forest department encourages people to become part of the conservation efforts and the animal adoption scheme is one of the ways to join in this endeavour,” she said.
