Lens on TG borders for illegal paddy 'imports'
NIZAMABAD: The state government has tightened security along the state borders to prevent the illegal transport of paddy from Maharashtra and Karnataka into Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts.
Traders are trying to bring paddy from Maharashtra’s Nanded district and Karnataka’s Bidar district to benefit from the higher Minimum Support Price (MSP) due to the bonus offered in Telangana.
In Nizamabad, farmers cultivated paddy on 4.33 lakh acres during the kharif season, with 3.71 lakh acres dedicated to fine varieties. The district administration has opened 673 paddy purchasing centres, targeting a procurement of 12 lakh metric tons of paddy. While the harvest is complete in Banswada and Bodhan areas, it continues in Nizamabad, Armoor, and Balkonda areas.
In Kamareddy district, the administration has set a target to procure 8 lakh metric tons of paddy, establishing 423 purchasing centres. So far, officials have purchased 30,629 metric tons from 4,466 farmers. Kamareddy district collector Ashish Sangwan recently visited border areas in Madnoor, instructing officials to prevent illegal transportation of paddy from Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Additionally, special officer A. Sharath inspected paddy procurement and a comprehensive door-to-door household survey in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts on Thursday. He visited the purchasing centre in Gargul village, Kamareddy district, and interacted with farmers and officials. Nizamabad district collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu briefed the special officer on the paddy procurement process.
