Mahavir Jayanti celebrations begin today

Devotees are engaging in religious rituals inspired by the teachings of Mahavir, who preached the right faith, right knowledge and right conduct (Tri Ratna or Three Jewels) for the welfare of society.

Hyderabad: The Jain community in Hyderabad is all set to celebrate the 2,624th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Mahavir with grandeur and devotion on Thursday. The festivities will begin with the Shakrastav Abhishek, a special ritual using herbs and medicinal plants, signifying spiritual purification and healing.

Celebrations commenced on Wednesday with a series of charity and welfare activities across the city. Devotees are engaging in religious rituals inspired by the teachings of Mahavir, who preached the right faith, right knowledge and right conduct (Tri Ratna or Three Jewels) for the welfare of society.

All 35 Jain temples in the city have been adorned with lights and floral decorations for the occasion. Among the major events is a religious procession starting from the Feelkhana Jain Temple. Accompanied by chants and bhajans, the procession will move towards the Exhibition Grounds in Nampally, carrying messages of non-violence and peaceful coexistence. At the Exhibition Grounds, a large religious discourse has been organised, where Jain monks from across the country will deliver sermons on the teachings of Mahavir. Thousands of devotees are expected to attend the programme.

At Shree Jain Parswanath Temple, Chaarkaman near Charminar, Mahavir Janma Kalyanak will be observed at 7.30 am. Speaking about the arrangements, temple secretary Praveen Jain Nahata said, “All Jain temples in the city are participating in the celebrations. This year’s highlight is the special Shakrastav Abhishek,” he explained.

At Shree Godiji Parshvanath Jain Temple in Karwan, one of the oldest Jain temples in the city, extensive preparations have been made. Trustee Sajjanraj Nahar said, “The temple, over 400 years old and located in a vast open area, has been decorated with lights and flowers. We have also organised several welfare and charity events to mark the occasion.”

Hyderabad, home to several heritage Jain temples, reflects the deep-rooted presence and integration of the Jain community in the city's cultural fabric. Known for its large number of entrepreneurs, the community is also planning a series of business conclaves in the coming days, aimed at guiding young entrepreneurs and exploring future market opportunities.
