Mancherial braces for flood from Godavari

Adilabad: As Mancherial town faced the flood threat from the Godavari River, the officials on Monday evacuated pregnant women, lactating women and their newborns from the Mother and Child Health Centre to district headquarters in ambulances. The center is located on the river bank and has witnessed floods in the past and there is a chance of flooding this time too if the Godavari River swells any further. MLA K. Premsagar Rao and collector Kumar Deepak, who visited the hospital, have ordered the evacuation.

The Kaleshwaram project’s backwaters and water discharged from Yellampalli entered the low-lying colonies Ramnagar and NTR Nagar. The MLA visited these colonies and assured the residents that the government was taking measures to avoid untoward incidents. Meanwhile, floodwater entered the cotton and paddy fields in Hajipur and Mancherial mandals.

Godavari is flowing high at Mancherial with water discharged downstream from Sripada Yellampalli by lifting the 30 gates. Along with collector and irrigation officials, the MLA visited the Yellampalli project and urged the officials to be alert since there was a possible flood threat to the Mancherial town if the river swelled further.

Collector appealed to the people of low-lying areas and the areas where flood water was clogged to contact the control room immediately for help and added that government machinery was on high alert and ready to extend any help to the people. Mancherial DCP Bhaskar said a quick response force with 20 police personnel and a speed boat was kept ready at the Godavari to take up relief and rescue operations.
