Minors caught driving will be detained in juvenile homes
HYDERABAD: Parents, guardians and vehicle owners will now be on their toes. Minors caught driving will face serious consequences, including a five-day remand in a juvenile home. They will be made to clean toilets and serving food to orphans apart from being subject to counselling sessions and motivational speeches. Section 180 of the Motor Vehicles Act deals with vehicle owners, while Section 181 pertains to licence violations wherein even minors caught in traffic violations will not be spared.
Hyderabad Commissionerate has imposed it, while the Rachakonda and Cyberabad commissionerates will do so after a magistrate grants them custody.
Additionally, in a bid to curb road mishaps involving young drivers, the city traffic police are preparing a memo for the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to recommend cancellation of licences for offenders. Alarming statistics from 2024 show that Hyderabad, Rachakonda, and Cyberabad reported 1,890, 1,289, and 1,400 cases of minor violations, respectively.
Hyderabad joint commissioner of traffic, P. Viswa Prasad, said “Cases involving minors will be handled strictly under law and order protocols, with further processes carried out by the Traffic Training Institute (TTI).”
He explained that such cases will be forwarded to TTI, where the vehicle owner will receive counseling, while the minor will be detained in a juvenile home in Saidabad for three to five days, as directed by the additional chief metropolitan judge.
