Mismanagement claims hit EPTRI
Environmental Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI)

Hyderabad: The Environmental Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI) is under scrutiny over allegations of mismanagement, staff dominance and recruitment irregularities. The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) Joint Action Committee (JAC) has urged the Telangana government to take immediate corrective action.
One of the biggest concerns raised is the continued influence of Andhra-origin employees in an institute that belongs to the Telangana government. “Even after seven years of statehood, Andhra employees still hold key positions, sidelining local talent,” Rajanna, a member of the JAC alleged. The absence of a scientific advisory committee for projects, which has persisted for years, was also spoken about as a major issue affecting the institute’s efficiency.
Another serious allegation is that retired officials have managed to retain their positions while drawing hefty salaries and securing promotions. “They have turned EPTRI into a post-retirement luxury club instead of a research institute,” claimed Dr Srikanth, another JAC representative. The outdated and rarely updated institute website has also been pointed out as a sign of administrative negligence.
Recruitment irregularities have added to the discontent. Job notifications have reportedly been issued and later cancelled without explanation, leaving many applicants frustrated. The JAC accused the institute of “subjecting unemployed youth to mental distress through regional discrimination in hiring.”
Responding to these concerns, environment minister Konda Surekha assured that she would personally visit the institute and conduct a full-scale review. “Every issue brought to my attention will be addressed and the necessary reforms will be implemented,” she reportedly told them. The petition was submitted to the minister at the Telangana Secretariat by JNTUH JAC, led by its chairman Dr Botla Bikshapathi, vice-president P. Sukumar Reddy and other committee members.
