Murders, kidnaps, rapes and dowry deaths register upward trend in Rachakonda

Hyderabad: Murders, kidnaps, rapes and dowry deaths registered an upward trend in Rachakonda in 2024, according to Rachakonda Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu here on Monday.

Murders registered 11 per cent rise in 2024, while kidnaps including minor missing cases and rapes including fake promises of marriage recorded 10 per cent and 11 per cent rise, respectively, and dowry deaths registered 13 per cent increase.

As many as 73 murders took place in 2024 in Rachakonda police Commissionerate as against 66 in 2023, while 463 kidnaps occurred in 2024 compared to 420 last year. As many as 384 rape cases were reported in 2024 as against 327 in 2023, while 18 dowry deaths took place in 2024 compared to 16 in 2023.

However, domestic violence, molestation and POCSO, dacoity, robbery, burglaries, automobile and ordinary thefts registered a decline. Addressing annual press conference, Sudheer Babu said the year 2024 was marked by unwavering commitment to justice, public safety, and community well-being, with a special emphasis on Visible Policing, Quick Response (VQT) and integration of technology to combat rising crimes, particularly those affecting women, weaker sections and victims from cross sections of society.

“In alignment with the Telangana State government’s mission, we intensified efforts against drug abuse and trafficking. With coordinated effort, we could arrest 521 NDPS and drug offenders this year and seized Rs.88.25 crore worth of drugs and mounted effective surveillance over 159 drug traffickers,” he explained.

Addressing a case load of 33,084 cases with a commendable 76 per cent resolution rate which is highest in the State, the Rachakonda Commissioterate registered 64 per cent conviction rate which is highest in Telangana for major crimes for the sixth consecutive year.

Effective surveillance over bad characters and crime hotspots resulted in 10 per cent reduction in reporting of property crime initiatives such as SHE teams, Bharosa centres supported by increased patrolling in vulnerable areas fostered a safer environment for women and children.

As a result reporting of crime against women is reduced by 9 per cent comparatively. “Adhering to evidence based and predictive policing, we have improved response time, optimized resource utilization, and bolstered our capabilities to address complex challenges like cyber crime,” he said.

This year, the cyber crime unit successfully made efforts to refund Rs.22 crore to victims of cyber fraud. In the domain of traffic management and road safety, the proactive measures, technological interventions yielded significant results.

Covering 5122 sq kms area, marked with of five national highways and 61 kms stretch of ORR, huge commutation of rural and sub- urban folk could have resulted in high number of fatalities. The efforts in the form of public awareness, enforcing MV Act and coordinated intervention of stake holders yielded in remarkable reduction of road accidents.

“There is 12.30 per cent reduction in accident cases and 12.21 per cent decrease in fatalities. Our proactive participation in National Lok Adalats facilitated the resolution of 11,440 compoundable IPC and SLL cases, 70,719 e-Petty cases. These efforts underline our dedication in providing swift and effective justice to the community,” Sudheer Babu said.

The VQT being the flagship initiative, introduction of bicycle patrolling with active participation of women officers, visible policing and community interaction enhanced the public confidence. “Our Blue Colts and patrol cars handled 2,41,742 Dial 100 calls with average response time 8.37 mts which is highest in the State. As we move into 2025, together, as a team we will strive to make Rachakonda a beacon of safety, security and service to the society,” he added.
