National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad Thrills Telangana Farmers

Nizamabad: The establishment of the National Turmeric Board (NTB) in Nizamabad has brought joy to the people of north Telangana, particularly turmeric farmers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled his assurance made during the last Parliamentary elections, dispelling doubts about the board's location and affirming Nizamabad as its base due to its prominence in turmeric cultivation.

The NTB aims to promote innovation, global outreach, and value addition for turmeric as a commercial crop. Nizamabad BJP MP Arvind Dharmapuri, who pledged during the 2019 elections to establish the board, had faced criticism when only a Spices Board office was set up in Nizamabad. However, during his recent Telangana visit, Modi reaffirmed the promise and officially announced the NTB's establishment, with senior BJP leader Palle Ganga Reddy appointed as its first chairperson.

Turmeric is cultivated across 20 states, with a total area of 3,05,182 hectares producing approximately 10,74,526 metric tonnes annually. Telangana is among the top producers, with Nizamabad leading with 13,942 hectares under cultivation, followed by Jagtial (8,567 hectares) and Nirmal (6,512 hectares), yielding 2,26,241 metric tonnes across the state.

For decades, farmers in the region have demanded the NTB to enhance market opportunities, export potential, and overall growth of the turmeric industry. Indian turmeric, valued as a kitchen essential and wellness product, is exported to countries such as Bangladesh, UAE, UK, USA, Australia, and Japan, among others. With the board's establishment, exports are expected to increase significantly.

The NTB will incorporate Spices Board officials, with Dr A.B. Rema Shree, director of the Spices Board, appointed as secretary on additional charge. A new office will be set up in Nizamabad, and staff will be appointed soon.
