Hyderabad:Minister Konda Surekha charged that the Modi-led NDA government had undermined the process of selecting the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) by making an arbitrary appointment. For free and fair elections, the CEC must remain independent. However, the NDA government had not considered the opinion of the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who was part of the selection committee.
“Rahul Gandhi stressed that the Election Commission's independence relies on a fair and transparent selection process. Rahul Gandhi also strongly criticised the government for disregarding the Supreme Court’s order and removing the Chief Justice of India from the selection panel. This move has further shaken public confidence in the fairness of the electoral process,” Surekha pointed out.
