New ration cards being issued after 10 years in TG

Officials recently conducted surveys to update and add eligible beneficiaries to the ration card system

WARANGAL/KARIMNAGAR: After a decade-long wait, the Congress government has launched the long-pending ration card issuance process with a large-scale rollout on Republic Day, January 26. A total of 323 new ration cards were issued in Hanamkonda and 772 in Karimnagar, marking the beginning of the long-overdue initiative.

Under the Food Security Card scheme, each registered person is entitled to 6 kg of rice, while Antyodaya cardholders receive 35 kg per family and Annapurna cardholders get 10 kg per member. This is to support economically weaker families through free rice distribution.

Ration cards have become essential for accessing various government schemes like Loan waiver scheme, Arogyasri health insurance, Indiramma housing programme and Gruha Lakshmi housing scheme. The increasing importance of ration cards has led to a surge in applications, with many seeking inclusion after years of neglect in updates.

Officials recently conducted surveys to update and add eligible beneficiaries to the ration card system. The eligibility is based on annual income limits: Rural areas: ₹1.5 lakh, Urban areas: ₹2 lakh. Additionally, landholding criteria include a maximum of 3.5 acres for dry land and 7.5 acres for irrigated land.

In Hanamkonda, 32,987 applications were received, with 323 new cards issued. In Karimnagar, 18,384 applications were submitted, leading to 772 new cards being distributed. The remaining applications are under review.

District civil supply officers D. Komuraiah and G. Narsinga Rao confirmed that applications are being scrutinised at the ward level before final approval by the collector and the commissioner of civil supplies. The goal is to prevent duplication and ensure only eligible beneficiaries receive ration cards.

The Civil Supplies Department has directed officials to expedite pending applications through detailed field surveys. The verification process will ensure that all necessary updates are made, eliminating discrepancies and ensuring fair distribution.
