NHRC Orders for Detailed Report on Lagcharla Incident
Hyderabad: The NHRC on Thursday said it had taken cognisance of a complaint alleging harassment, torture and implication of villagers of Lagcharla after they protested against land acquisition without proper procedure. The commission issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, calling for a detailed report in the matter within two weeks. The NHRC said it would be sending its team for an inquiry given the gravity of the matter.
The report is expected to include the status of the FIRs, persons in judicial custody and the villagers who, out of fear, are allegedly hiding in the forest areas without basic amenities. The Commission has also demanded information on whether any medical examination of the victim women was done and medical care provided to the injured villagers.
The commission in a press noted that most victims were from the SC, ST and BC communities. Fearing police action some villagers were forced to leave their houses to take shelter in forests and farmlands without food, medical aid and basic amenities, the NHRC stated.
The arrests had followed an attack on the Vikarabad district collector and revenue officials on November 11 at Lagcharla during a public hearing on land acquisition for a proposed pharma project.
