Hyderabad: Telangana emerged as the top spender in the country on alcoholic beverages with per capita consumption expenditure of Rs 1,623 in 2022-23, according to a latest report.
As per the report titled "Revenue Mobilisation from Taxes on Alcoholic Beverages" published by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), Telangana topped the chart with the highest average annual per capita consumption expenditure on alcoholic beverages.
From an average spending of Rs 745 in 2014-15, Telangana witnessed a huge rise in spending on alcoholic beverages.
The annual per capita consumption expenditure has fallen in most states during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-21, but it was not the same case with Telangana as it saw a spending of Rs 1,719 (as per current prices).
Telangana's neighbouring states Andhra Pradesh (Rs 1,306) and Chhattisgarh (Rs 1,227) also top the charts at number 2 and number 4 respectively.
Compared to 2014, states like Goa, Kerala and even Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal reported a downward trend in Consumption Expenditure on Alcoholic Beverages.
In addition, the young state also topped the state excise collection per capita per year with Rs 4,860 in 2022-23, followed by Karnataka (Rs 4,432) and Haryana (Rs 3,219).
