ANKAPUR / NIZAMABAD: With corn cobs flooding the market and weather turning pleasant, people in north Telangana are lining up to enjoy roasted cobs or their boiled kernels.
Whether national highways, state or district roads, one can witness the sale of these cobs. Costing ₹20 or ₹10 apiece, they can be a meal itself, whatever be the time of day or night.
Manohar, a youth from Armoor, said he regularly eats roasted maize in the rainy season. "We get fresh maize during this season and it is so tasty, " he underlined. Rubbing the roasted cob with lime dipped in salt gives an immense boost to the taste.
In Telangana, maize is cultivated over 6.09 lakh acres during Vana Kalam (Kharif) season and 5.11 lakh acres during Yasangi (Rabi) season. Farmers cultivate it as a sole or inter crop. In recent times, boiled maize sales have also increased.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Ethari Narsavva, vending corn / maize cobs on National Highway 63 at Ankapur in Armoor mandal, said they roast the cobs on charcoal that is fanned.
She said while diabetics prefer boiled maize, roasted maize is a hot favourite of all age groups. Narsavva wanted the state government to extend financial aid to cob vendors through women self-help groups.
Vadas made of corn are also a favourite dish during this season. At markets, farmers are offering a dozen maize cobs for ₹60–₹80.
