No School Holiday for Hyderabad

Hyderabad: There will be no holiday on Tuesday for schools in Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts, the state government announced, even as one death was reported due in a rain-related incident on Monday. Srinivas Rao, a 50-year-old principal from a college in Hyderabad, was electrocuted on Sunday while attempting to clear debris during the heavy rain in Ghatkesar. It is suspected that a snapped power cable caused the incident.

A holiday has been declared for Nizamabad, Khammam, Adilabad and Nirmal districts which are badly rain affected.

The GHMC, meanwhile, has identified 596 dilapidated buildings of which 344 have been addressed, four have been sealed and evacuation ordered in 129. The GHMC has also stepped up efforts to manage the traffic disruptions.

The GHMC lakes division reported that 33 lakes were releasing excess water downstream, including Rangadhamuni Kunta (Kukatpally), Mundla Katwa (Moosapet), Boin Cheruvu (Hasmathpet), and Nalla Cheruvu (Uppal), while seven others have reached their full tank levels (FTL): Sudalavani Kunta (Allahpur), Patan Cheruvu (Patancheru), and Raisamudram (Ramachandrapuram).

Some schools and educational institutions declared holidays on Monday, with some shifting to online classes for a few hours. Most IT and ITES companies, following a request from Cyberabad police, encouraged employees to work from home to ensure their safety amidst the ongoing rains. Hyderabad collector Anudeep Durishetty directed officials to closely monitor the water levels.

The water level at the Osmansagar and Himayatsagar were rising. Despite a brief respite from the relentless downpour on Monday morning, several areas remained waterlogged, forcing residents to contend with the situation.

According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society, Saroornagar circle in Uppal received the highest rainfall in Hyderabad on Monday, at 13.3 mm. Other areas, including Gajularamaram, saw 8 mm of rain. On a broader scale, Nirmal district recorded the highest rainfall in the state, with Akkapur receiving 81 mm.

Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi stated on Monday that the GHMC administration, in coordination with other departments, was actively engaged in field-level work. She said static emergency teams and Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams have been deployed across 141 locations. The GHMC control room received 141 complaints regarding water stagnation, of which 140 have been resolved. Similarly, 137 of the 140 complaints about fallen trees have been resolved.

The administration has also set up health camps to prevent the spread of viral fevers and other diseases that typically follow such weather conditions. Residents were advised to avoid walking on roads during the rains, particularly with small children and the elderly, and to contact the GHMC control room for assistance if needed.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in 10 districts of Telangana for Tuesday. Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds is very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Suryapet and Mahabubabad districts.
