No Sign of NDSA’s Final Report on KLIS Barrages

The government had declared that it would base any decision on the future of the KLIS barrages only on the final report from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), is yet to receive it.

Hyderabad:Uncertainty continues to loom large whether the state can put to use this year the Annaram and Sundilla barrages of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme (KLIS), and whether repairs to the partially, but seriously damaged Medigadda barrage can be taken up and completed before the rainy season begins and starts flooding the Godavari river.

The government had declared that it would base any decision on the future of the KLIS barrages only on the final report from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), is yet to receive it. The report is learnt to be with the Union jal shakti ministry though the final version was submitted around a month ago.

It may be recalled that after the Congress government came to power, it decided that it will follow the NDSA’s interim recommendations made more than a year ago to not o store water at the three barrages. The NDSA had said that storing water at Medigadda barrage with its severely damaged Block 7, as well as at Annaram and Sundilla which had sprung leaks from under their foundations, was not advisable as this could lead to greater damage to the barrages.

It is only till the end of May or possibly till the middle of June that any repairs can be taken up and if the NDSA report is not received soon, then it will not be possible to put these barrages to work this year too.
