Hyderabad: Osmania General Hospital (OGH) successfully conducted five liver transplants in a month, offering life-saving treatment to young patients from low-income backgrounds. The surgeries, costing ₹30-₹40 lakh in private hospitals, were done free of cost under the state government's Aarogyasri scheme.
Three cadaver and two live donor transplants were performed for patients suffering from rare genetic liver diseases, including Tyrosinemia Type 1, Wilson’s disease, and Chronic Budd-Chiari Syndrome. Prof. Madhusudhan, Head of Surgical Gastroenterology, led the procedures and called it a landmark achievement for a government hospital.
Among the patients was a two-year-old boy with liver cancer due to Tyrosinemia Type 1. His grandmother donated a portion of her liver. A seven-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man with Wilson’s disease received transplants, with the child’s mother acting as the donor. A young woman with Neuro-Wilson’s disease and a 40-year-old laborer with Budd-Chiari Syndrome received cadaver transplants.
Prof. Madhusudhan credited the medical team and government support, emphasising the importance of accessible healthcare, providing hope to underprivileged families.
