OU hosts residential training programme for tribal students

Hyderabad: The ability to communicate effectively in English is a gateway to boundless opportunities, declared Governor Jishnu Dev Varma after inaugurating a one-month residential training programme for tribal undergraduate students at Osmania University.

“English is no longer a language of oppression but a language of universal expression,” he remarked, linking the programme to the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India).

Addressing the gathering, the Governor emphasised that mastering English and communication skills not only opens floodgates to academic and professional success but also fosters confidence and the ability to influence and inspire others.

Organised by the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC), the programme, sponsored under the Governor’s discretionary grants, aims to enhance the linguistic and communicative proficiency of tribal students across Telangana. Sixtysix students from 33 districts are participating in the initiative.

The event was attended by OU Vice Chancellor Prof. Kumar Molugaram, and Prof. Vijaya, director of ELTC and programme convener. Prof. Molugaram reaffirmed the university’s commitment to inclusive education, praising the initiative for addressing the specific needs of tribal students.

The Governor urged students never to hesitate to ask questions and asked teachers to focus on the needs of every student, particularly those from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds, stressing that dedicated teaching can unlock the potential of even the most hesitant learners.

Coordinated by Prof. Saveen Souda and Dr. K.W. Christopher, the programme had resource persons from reputed institutions in India. The initiative is seen as a step towards enabling tribal students to realise their aspirations and contribute meaningfully to society.

The Governor also proposed extending the programme’s benefits by sharing its video lessons with other government degree colleges across Telangana, amplifying its reach and impact.
