Over 70% Graduates, 90% Teachers cast vote in MLC polls

Polling conducted peacefully, counting of votes on March 3

Hyderabad: The polling for three MLC seats, including one Graduates and two Teachers constituencies, was conducted peacefully across 15 districts in Telangana on Thursday, barring a few sporadic incidents. The counting of votes is scheduled for March 3. Notably, the polling percentage among Graduates was lower compared to Teachers.

In the Karimnagar-Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad Constituency, the voter turnout for graduates seat stood at 70.42 per cent or 2,50,106 votes polled out of a total of 3,55,159, while teachers seats recorded a turnout of 91.90 per cent 24,895 votes cast out of total 27,088 votes.

The Nalgonda-Warangal-Khammam Teachers Constituency saw 93.55 per cent polling.

Polling commenced at 8 am and continued until 4 pm. In some polling stations, voters turned up in large numbers after 3 pm. All those present in the queue before 4 pm were allowed to cast their votes.

A total of 56 candidates contested in the Karimnagar-Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad Graduates Constituency. The Nalgonda-Warangal-Khammam Teachers Constituency witnessed 19 candidates in the fray, while 15 candidates contested in the Karimnagar-Medak-Adilabad-Nizamabad Teachers Constituency.

However, the polling was not entirely devoid of tensions. Earlier in the day, a heated argument erupted between the Congress and the BJP activists at a polling station in Naspur mandal, Mancherial district. Alleging police high-handedness, BJP leaders staged a protest, which led to a confrontation with Congress workers who also arrived at the spot.

The BJP fielded candidates for all three seats, whereas the ruling Congress contested only the Graduates MLC seat. The BRS, on the other hand, opted out of these elections.
