Hyderabad: The Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM has emerged as the third largest party in two Muslim-dominated constituencies — Okhla and Mustafabad — that it contested in the Delhi Assembly elections, relegating the Congress to fourth.

MIM candidate Shifa Ur Rehman Khan got 39,558 votes or 18.8 per cent of total votes polled in Okhla, after AAP’s winning candidate Amanatullah Khan and the BJP’s Manish Choudhary.

MIM’s Tahir Hussain secured 33,474 votes, 18.8 per cent of the total votes in Mustafabad. BJP’s winning candidate Mohan Singh Bisht, won the Muslim-majority seat, with 85,215 votes as against AAP’s Adeel Ahmed Khan who got 67,637.

If Hussain’s votes were transferred to the AAP, Adeel Khan would have won the seat.

Both the MIM candidates were among the accused in the 2020 Delhi riots, which claimed 53 lives. They were out of jail on parole to campaign in the elections.

Owaisi said that the MIM would continue to fight for the rights of Delhi people. He targeted political parties that claimed to be secular but divided the Opposition votes.
