Hyderabad: Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, conferred the nation’s highest war-time bravery award, the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), for his courage in the Kargil war, inaugurated the Param Vir Chakra Park in Secunderabad Cantonment on Saturday. Veterans of the 1971 war with Pakistan and the Kargil war, as well as Major General Rakesh Manocha, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Telangana and Andhra Sub Area (TASA), were present.
The Param Vir Chakra Park pays tribute to the supreme bravery and sacrifice of the select few who have been awarded the nation’s highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy. A centerpiece of the park is a mural depicting the signing of the document by which the Pakistan Army surrendered to the Indian Armed Forces on December 16, 1971. The park also features the gallant acts of each of the PVC awardees.
In his address, Sub. Maj. Sanjay Kumar spoke about the importance of remembering and honouring the sacrifices of the brave men who have served the nation with unparalleled courage. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the TASA chief Maj. Gen. Manocha for his support and guidance in bringing this project to fruition.
Maj. Gen. Manocha highlighted the significance of the park as a source of inspiration for future generations. He commended the efforts of all those involved in creating a space that not only commemorated the bravery of the soldiers but also educated the public about their heroic deeds.
Sub. Maj. Sanjay Kumar also delivered motivational lectures to Agniveers who are undergoing training at the 1 EME Centre, AOC Centre and Artillery Centre.
Sub. Maj. Sanjay Kumar, then a rifleman, was conferred the PVC for his actions that led to the capture of the area known as ‘Flat Top 4875’ in the Mushkoh Valley on 4 July 1999. Despite facing enemy fire, he charged at the enemy and killed three intruders in hand to hand combat. He was seriously injured but charged onto a second bunker where the enemy left behind a machine gun and fled. Rifleman Sanjay Kumar picked up the UMG and killed the fleeing enemy. Although bleeding profusely, he refused to be evacuated.
